Since his inauguration three-and-a-half years ago, Trump’s basic political strategy has been to delay, obfuscate, lie, and promote dissension among Americans.
But at the same time, the Democrats who control the U.S. House of Representatives (235 to 199) where they have a majority over Republicans, have been accomplices to Trump’s tactics.
They have done so by allowing Trump to wait out the clock before the Nov. 3, 2020 election by not passing new rules that will accelerate Trump and his cronies from appearing before their numerous oversight committees.
Why have the Dems been sitting on their hands about making long-overdue rule changes since they gained the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives?
That is something House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi will have to answer, but it is clear the House is weakening the Democratic Party in its efforts to get to the truth about many things the Trump administration and its top
officials are trying to hide. This goes from Trump’s taxes, to who got the COVID bailout loans, to its policies caging immigrant children and separating them from their parents.
Why is the Dem leadership of the U.S. House of representatives so timid when it comes to confronting Trump and his officials?
Maybe they are too complacent. They have job security and great pensions and benefits. Pelosi is worth $100 million, so when you have that type of money, you obviously have no money problems, unlike the 40% of Americans who do not have a safety net of $1,000 to cover an emergency expense.
Pelosi has been in Congress since 1987, so in the intervening 33 years, she has become very comfortable in her job. At 80-years-old, she is in no hurry to push these huge political issues to the fast-track. As a result, Americans suffer from Trump’s gameplan to delay and obfuscate, as the House Dems fiddle away like Nero.
A Great Suggestion From a Former Republican
So it is no surprise that a great plan to accelerate Trump’s accountability to Americans comes from a former Republican. Kurt Bardella, President of Endeavor Strategies, and a leader in the Lincoln Project said today on the
MSNBC show, Morning Joe, The House Democrats have it in their power to make rule changes to accelerate the accountability of the legal rampage the Trump administration has been conducting since its inauguration.
This is a great suggestion from Bardella, a former Republican who is more aggressive against Trump than the DNC leadership, including the forgettable DNC Chairman Tom Perez. Bartdella’s has made a great suggestion. It’s long overdue for the leader in the U.S. House to come to life, otherwise, the next election will not be the great success they hope for.
Their collective inaction in the House is not what the progressive Democrats are looking for. The Bernie Sanders campaign had the energy the current DNC-led Democrat Party lacks. That is the energy and enthusiasm gap that is hurting Joe Biden. Imagine what would Bernie do if he has Pelosi’s position?
If the Dems want to re-energize the party, they should replace the sleepy Perez with a progressive or Bardella, who is affiliated with the Lincoln Project, a group of disaffected Republications who are making better anti-Trump TV ads than the Dems. The problem is that the corporate Dems who control the DNC would have a problem relinquishing control to an independent thinker.
It’s time to make the rule changes in the House, so Americans can see accountability and real oversight of Trump’s programs. People want to see Trump’s taxes, so it can lead to an investigation of whether he cheated on his New York state property tax and loan applications. It’s also clear to many viewers watching on TV that Trump cronies, like Attorney General Bill Barr, don’t take the House committee hearings seriously. He regards the questions as a nuisance. We see it in his face and demeanor.
Can Pelosi Go Into Action Mode?
So it’s time Pelosi goes into overdrive to make the needed rule changes if she has the energy and political will to confront Trump in a meaningful way. Pelosi has been in Congress for 33 years and she makes a great case for term limits. Being inactive and unwilling to make rule changes in the legislative chamber Dems control is inexcusable when we have a lawless administration in power.
It’s time for the Dems to decide if they want to sit on the sidelines as Trump runs up and down the field, or do they want to stop his game and demand some accountability? Pelosi can make the needed changes if she has the energy and imagination, but if the past is any indication, it looks like the Dems will continue to become part of the problem and not provide the solution to Trump’s delaying strategy.
